Jimmy John's sandwich chain said Wednesday that hackers stole customer debit and credit card data from 13 stores in Florida, including one at 533 S Howard Ave. in Tampa. In all, the security breach affected 216 stores.

An intruder stole login credentials from a vendor to remotely access credit card readers at some corporate and franchised locations between June 16 and Sept. 5, the Illinois-based chain said in a statement on its website.

Affected cards appear to have been swiped at the stores and not entered manually or online. Stolen information may include the card number, the cardholder's name, the verification code and the card's expiration date.

Jimmy John's learned of the security breach on July 30 and hired third-party forensic experts to assist with the investigation. The compromise has been contained, the company said, and customers can use their credit and debit cards securely at Jimmy John's stores.
