Liz Claiborne Outlet stores to close

Liz Claiborne outlet stores to close

As long expected, Liz Claiborne Inc. will turn off the lights at all 87 of its Liz Claiborne Outlet stores, including Prime Outlets Ellenton.

It's a followup to the company's decision to sell the moderately priced apparel brand only through JCPenney effective in October. After that the only places to buy Liz Claiborne in the United States will be JCPenney and a line called Liz Claiborne New York that is designed by Isaac Mizrahi only for TV shopping network QVC.

Claiborne will take a $7.2 million charge against second-quarter earnings to close the outlet stores by early next year. Claiborne plans to keep its other outlet chains for Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand, Kensie and Kate Spade. Penney signed a 10-year exclusive for the Claiborne line last fall with an option to own the brand in five years.
