Publix Super Markets is expanding its reach in the north.
The Lakeland-based chain said Friday it has entered into an agreement with Bi-Lo Holdings to purchase four BI-LO branded stores in North Carolina and three in South Carolina. Based in Jacksonville, Bi-Lo also owns Winn-Dixie grocery stores and recently bought Tampa-based Sweetbay Supermarkets.
Terms of deal, which is expected to close in October, were not announced.
"Publix has a strong financial foundation that allows us to aggressively grow throughout existing markets and our new Charlotte division," said Publix chief executive officer Ed Crenshaw.
Bi-Lo officials said they will continue to fine-tune the company and network of stores in order to fulfill its strategy of providing the freshest foods and best deals to a broader base of customers.
Publix has 1,073 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.
