TAMPA — Spaghetti Warehouse in Ybor City will close for good Sunday despite a recent effort to save and relocate the restaurant in the Tampa Bay area.
"Within the past several months, we have made every effort to remain open. Because of the overwhelming response and support we received from the community, we made an emotional decision to continue serving our guests with the hope we could experience a turnaround and find a replacement location," said a news release from a company spokesman. "However, these events did not happen for us and the decision we have made, at this time, is to proceed with closing this location."
Spaghetti Warehouse personnel originally announced in March that the restaurant would close after 25 years in business. But a strong push back by local fans made the operating company behind Spaghetti Warehouse, BLD Brands, reconsider.
There will be no second chance this time around, however.
"This is permanent this time," said Spaghetti Warehouse spokesman David Ayers.
Officials with BLD Brands, which operates 142 restaurants in 15 states, said the Ybor restaurant, 1911 13th St., was no longer profitable. After surveying Tampa Bay residents, the company decided to look to relocate Spaghetti Warehouse to Brandon by next year.
But a news release put out Monday morning said that's no longer the plan.
"To our many guests and to everyone throughout the Tampa community, we say, again, thank you. We enjoyed serving you, your family and friends. And, it was our pleasure to celebrate your many birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions," the release reads. "We remain hopeful to open another location in the Tampa market in the future."
Spaghetti Warehouse opened in 1991 in a building that once housed a cigar factory in Ybor City. The restaurant is part of a chain that has 15 locations in seven states. The chain began in Dallas in 1972 and is known for its family atmosphere and Italian dishes. For some time, the Tampa restaurant hosted murder mystery dinner shows.
It is unclear if the company will hold a public auction for the contents of the restaurant.
