St. Petersburg City Council approves The Shops' design

ST. PETERSBURG — The City Council unanimously approved the designs for the major renovation of the former BayWalk on Thursday, so construction on the Shops at St. Pete, as the retail plaza is now called, should begin within about 30 days.

"A lot of things have to come together in the next couple weeks but that's the intent," said Kevin Dunn, a representative of the property owner, The Edwards Group.

The renovation calls for giving the 80,000-square-foot complex a more modern look with straight, clean lines and a departure from its original Mediterranean curves. There will be covered walkways, canopies over balconies, natural stone floors, Jumbotrons and more outdoor dining.

The Edwards Group expects the $30 million renovation to be completed in the first quarter of next year.
