Syms store in Tampa will close after Christmas

The one Syms store in Tampa will close as a result of Syms Corp. filing for bankruptcy.

The off-price apparel retailer that proved unable to digest its 2009 acquisition of Filene's Basement has chosen to close all 46 of its stores. That includes the one at 3251 W Hillsborough Ave. in Tampa.

Founded 52 years ago by one-time radio sports broadcaster Sy Syms as an inexpensive business suit emporium near Wall Street in New York, the Secaucus, N.J., chain was one of the pioneers of the off-price discount clothing industry.

Syms himself recorded the ads that end with the slogan, "An educated consumer is our best customer."

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week and said stores will close after the Christmas season.
