Tampa dining: Spanish Sabroso, Indian Tun-Du-Ree; wine garden

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS — How do you say delicious in Spanish?

Sabroso, not coincidentally, the tasty name of the newest restaurant and bakery in Seminole Heights, opened Oct. 29 on Nebraska Avenue, one block south of Hillsborough Avenue.

If the owners look as familiar as the cafe con leche and Cuban sandwiches, it's because Luis and Anita Capdevila also own La Teresita, the Boliche Boulevard favorite in West Tampa.

"This is a bit more uptown than La Teresita," said Anita of the casual cafe's 70-seat counter and booth service, plus patio seating.

The bakery lineup includes Cuban bread, guava pastries, tres leche cake, flan and more. The breakfast menu is All-American — omelets, steak and eggs, waffles, pancakes and such. At 11 a.m., the kitchen translates Cuban favorites, including arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, filet salteado and daily specials, such as vaca frita.

Classic Cuban sandwiches — small, $4.50, or large, $5.25 — come stacked with salami, pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickle, mustard, "and many people ask for onions, too," she adds.

A private banquet room upstairs accommodates 50. Diners may bring their own beer and wine; expect live musical entertainment on weekends.

Sunshine Cafe on Gandy Boulevard

Don't forget to bring ID to Sunshine Cafe, where breakfast, brunch and lunch are served daily.

"Locals, seniors and military personnel get a 10 percent discount," said owner Peter Vlahopoulos, who ran his own pasta and pizza restaurant in Philadelphia eight years ago. He managed a Tampa restaurant prior to opening Sunshine Cafe on Sept. 16. His wife owns the nearby Fantastic Sam's hair salon.

In addition to all the traditional breakfast items, scrapple, a Pennsylvania staple, is listed on the menu.

"If you like it, you'll know what it is,'' Vlahopoulos said.

Lunch specialties include salads, sandwiches — notably Philly steaks and gyros — with more Greek favorites planned. Desserts feature homemade cannoli, baklava and tiramisu.

"Cheesecake will be next to be added," he said. "The Cheesecake Factory has nothing on me."

Tun-Du-Ree heads downtown

Both Tun-Du-Ree restaurants have closed, and fans of "curry in a hurry" will have to wait at least a month before owner Pat Bhava reopens in downtown Tampa, in the former Metro spot, next to Taco Bus.

"This is much larger, about 5,000 square feet, with a very large kitchen," Bhava said. He will add a full bar, plus Indian beers and wine, to the traditional Indian specialties he served in his previous locations. Chicken tikka masala is the bestseller.

"I dare not change anything or our customers will get mad," he said.

The larger space is needed to grow Bhava's other business, Spice Line. In a partnership with Aramark, he will provide Indian food to corporate cafeterias, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase, St. Joseph's Hospital and soon the University of South Florida.

Cru Cellars offers outdoor seating

A little more than two years after opening Cru Cellars, Jennifer Bingham has expanded the wine bar with outdoor seating for 35, a wine garden tucked away from busy MacDill Avenue.

"It's become a gathering place since late September," she said. "Away from the noisy cars . . . in the back, with tables and benches and twinkling lights. Dogs and babies like it, too."

Cru Cellars sells 25 wines by the glass, and 10 flights of three varietals to sample. Dining service features a tapas menu, weekend brunch and artisanal meat and cheese selections. The retail section offers more than 350 labels.
