ST. PETERSBURG — Downtown St. Petersburg's Savannah's Cafe will close at the end of the month, according to a statement by owner John Warren.
The Southern cuisine restaurant at 1113 Central Ave., known for its mint juleps in mason jars and shrimp and grits, became a distinct player in the local restaurant scene when it opened nearly four years ago.
"Despite accomplishments, these are trying economic times and Savannah's Cafe must close — for now," Warren said in the statement. "Hopefully one day we will be back, but until then I look forward to seeing you around this great city."
Warren, a self-made businessman with a background in historic preservation, made a surprising late run in the 2009 St. Petersburg mayoral race. He received a small percentage of votes.
Savannah's Cafe has reduced its hours to Wednesdays through Sundays until it closes May 28.
