St. Petersburg's Bayfront Health now part of Community Health Systems chain

As expected, St. Petersburg's Bayfront Health System is now part of Tennessee-based hospital chain Community Health Systems Inc. The new owner reflects Community Health's completing it purchase of Naples-based Health Management Associates (HMA), which bought controlling interest in Bayfront last spring. Community Health Systems is one of the largest publicly-traded hospital companies in the country. Bayfront Health is made up of hospitals now operating under the Bayfront Health name in Brooksville, Dade City, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Spring Hill and Venice, as well as St. Petersburg. With the HMA deal, Community Health now owns, leases or operates 206 hospitals in 29 states. The chain, based in Franklin, Tenn., employs more than 135,000 people.
