Sylvia's Queen of Soul Food opens to select few

ST. PETERSBURG — The operators of Sylvia's Queen of Soul Food, investors, Mayor Bill Foster and local politicians cut the red ribbon and opened the restaurant to a select crowd Friday night.

The Midtown site on the ground floor of the historic Manhattan Casino is the family owned restaurant's only location outside of New York, where it became a Harlem mainstay since opening in 1962.

Owner Van Woods, son of the original owner Sylvia Woods, said everything came together because "the right people met at the right time, in the right spirit, and it couldn't have been better."

Sylvia's, at 642 22nd St. S., opens to the public at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, Nov. 9).
