More than 100 companies based in the Tampa Bay area will work on Tampa International Airport's multimillion dollar renovation.

From laying sod to cutting concrete, engineers, designers, electricians, roofers, painters and even acoustical ceiling cutters from around Tampa Bay will be at the airport over the next two years. Of the 173 subcontracting companies working on the airport's renovations, 105 of them are based in the region, said Danny Valentine, spokesman for the airport.

"Any time the community benefits, we also benefit," Valentine said. "There's always been a high priority to spread the wealth to as many local companies as we can."

More contractors are being added daily, such as Morrow Steel, a company based in Zephyrhills that was awarded a roughly $4 million contract and has the potential to win more.

Upon completion, the airport's renovations are forecast to have a $370 million economic impact on the bay area and will have created 9,000 construction-related jobs.

The overall cost of the airport renovation has increased by $10 million — or 1 percent — to $953 million, Valentine said.

"Our original budget figure was developed at a high level before we had brought our design-builders on board. We did expect to deviate some percentage from that number," Valentine said. "The $953 million figure reflects more detailed design and engineering as we've gotten deeper into the projects."
