Tampa auction hauls in $1-million for schools

At the state's unclaimed property auction held in Tampa on Saturday, $925,550 worth of jewelry, trinkets and other items were sold to bidders from around the country.

The money raised at the auction will be given to Florida's public school system.

Coordinated by Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink's office, the event cleared the state's inventory of items abandoned or unclaimed in safe deposit boxes from Florida banks.

The top selling item was a pair of platinum and gold earrings, each bearing a 3 carat European cut diamond, which sold for $18,000.

This year's auction haul bested last year's take by more than $100,000.
