Times expands coverage with new Plant City section

The Tampa Bay Times' coverage of the SouthShore and Brandon area frequently features Plant City news and events, whether it's a focus on problematic sinkholes, a profile of the Florida Strawberry Festival queen or the courageous effort of the state champion Durant High softball team.

Beginning June 15, that coverage expands with a regional section tailored to Plant City readers as we extend our reach into east Hillsborough County. The Plant City Times will be mailed to 10,000 residents every Friday. It will include stories, photos and sports coverage.

We've hired veteran reporter Rich Shopes to cover the area, and one of his first stories can be found on Page 11.

As part of the expansion, the Tampa Bay Times also will be available daily in newspaper racks and retail locations in the Plant City area.

Readers of the South Shore & Brandon Times will receive the additional coverage inside their section, along with ongoing stories on the region's other communities.

Plant City's diverse mix of Main Street appeal, cultural charm and agribusiness has drawn the interest of Times writers and photographers for years. Now we look forward to tapping into more stories about Hillsborough County's most flavorful city. Given that I live only a few miles away, I can't wait.

SouthShore & Brandon bureau chief Ernest Hooper
