Are the Tampa Bay Lightning's new owners hot to start building on downtown land they just bought along with the team?

Paul Catoe, the boss of Hillsborough's tourism marketing agency, created a buzz Tuesday when he said team owners told him they wanted to construct a hotel on a portion of the property near the Tampa Convention Center. He later dismissed their interest as chit-chat at a reception.

The team released a statement that owners were "excited and enthused'' about development opportunities for the 5.5 acres but "need to carefully look at the various options'' before deciding anything.

"What a terrible sport: teaching violence to young boys" >> God! Go watch non-action-baseball.. Hockey isn't boxing.. But boxing is all right with you i guess? Or Karate.. The Bolts deserve more, like a hotel ;)

they should partner with the rays and build the new stadium right there in downtown tampa

Would love to see a bigger convention center- connect this one with the existing one- to rival the Mouse's Convention Center.

Awesome! That means the Lightning can trade Filip Kuba to another hotel for two bellhops and a concierge!

Isn't the Ritz Carlton coming to Rocky Point?

I wonder if they would build the Rays a new stadium too. We need this team in Tampa so bad to survive long term. Downtown Tampa would be amazing with a new state of the art ball park.

Great idea! Now if only we could expand the convention center. Maybe partner with this group for a 600 room hotel and convention center expansion.

Great to see a sports franchise raising their own money for speculative projects instead of shamelessly begging the stupid city councils.

Great news! That area is a prime location for retail and hotels.
