A gas leak shut down part of Tyrone Boulevard and evacuated two businesses just after noon Wednesday.
The leak was reported about 11:40 a.m. at 4045 Tyrone Boulevard, just west of Park Street North. Police and hazardous materials teams shut down the intersection and a portion of Tyrone Boulevard for nearly two hours.
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Steve Lawrence said the leak was caused when a construction company digging under Park Street struck a a gas line. Yogurt City and MatressFirm stores in the area were evacuated because of their proximity to the leak, and crews also investigated reports of a gas smell at Outback Steakhouse.
Traffic was rerouted until about 1:30 p.m., when TECO People's Gas controlled the leak by shutting down the line.
