CLEARWATER — St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport on Tuesday reported another strong month of passenger traffic in April.
The airport said it handled 115,584 passengers in April, an increase of 27 percent or 24,875 passengers from the same month in 2013. The airport, which is also known by its three-letter airport code, PIE, said it was its strongest April since 2004 and the fourth consecutive month of passenger growth this year.
The year-to-date numbers: 422,697 passengers used the airport in the first four months of 2014. That's an increase of 70,535 passengers, or 20 percent, over St. Pete-Clearwater's total over the same time period in 2013.
Those numbers should get even better when the airport starts two new routes in the coming months. Allegiant Air, PIE's dominant carrier, will starting flying twice a week to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport beginning on Thursday. Then on June 9, Sun Country Airlines will add another flight to Biloxi, Miss.
