TAMPA — University Mall is getting a new movie theater.

Studio Movie Grill, a theater and dining concept, has signed a lease for 57,000 square feet in the former Frank Theatres site.

The theater will open later this year after major renovations. It will have 14 screens showing first-run movies and seating for 1,500 people.

University Mall will be Studio Movie Grill's first location in Florida and 18th location nationwide. The Dallas-based operator has 180 screens in eight states and is in the midst of a nationwide expansion.

"We are looking forward to offering not only the best in in-theater dining for local residents but also to becoming a true partner in the community and providing our new Tampa neighborhood numerous economic opportunities," said Studio Movie Grill founder and CEO Brian Schultz in a statement Tuesday.

The theaters will have lounge seats and dining tables and serve salads, pizzas, burgers, chicken entrees, pasta and desserts. The bar will have cocktails and microbrews.

Movie prices will be up to $11 for adults and $3 extra for movies shown in 3D.

Frank Theatres opened at University Mall in late 2011 but closed in 2013 and the space has been vacant ever since. Prior to Frank Theatres, Regal Entertainment operated a 16-screen megaplex at the site.

CBRE retail broker David Conn represented the landlord, Hudson Advisors, in arranging the lease for the new theater, which reflects a "multi-million dollar investment'' for the property, officials said.

Anchored by Macy's, Sears and Dillard's clearance center, the mall has struggled amid competition from newer, suburban centers.
