USF inks research park deal with Brazilian university

TAMPA — The University of South Florida's research park has inked a deal with a Brazilian counterpart in hopes of deepening the school's ties to the emerging South American economy.

USF and the research park at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul will host visiting scholars, collaborate on projects and share information under the five-year partnership deal.

The Brazilian university's research park — in Tampa's sister city of Porto Alegre — is home to multinational companies like Apple and Microsoft, said USF associate vice president Roger Brindley.

That will give USF's program, which focuses on smaller businesses and entrepreneurs, a chance to study a different model, and the partnership should open new opportunities for researchers across disciplines, Brindley said.
