By day, Kelly Legg of Brandon is a telecommunications professional. By night, she sneaks around yards in the Tampa Bay area, decorating them with cutouts of flamingos, cows, pigs or chickens, also known as flocking. The service costs from $85 to $145 or more, depending on the location and what's being rented. "It is a great alternative to sending flowers, balloon bouquets or gift baskets," says Legg, 41, who owns and operates Fun Sign Surprise based in Brandon. She has been a professional lawn greeter since November 2006. Her business has been steadily busy. She even scaled back her responsibilities with her communications career to meet demand.

When was your first "flocking?"

When I was 18, my dad was running for state office. One night, I gathered up several of my dad's campaign signs and stuck them in the yard of his opponent.

How much money can you expect to make in this business?

Between $15,000 and $40,000 a year, depending on how much time and energy you put in.

This job is not for you if . . .

. . . you are directionally challenged. A sense of direction is a must when sneaking into unsuspecting neighborhoods in the dark.

What do you like most about the job?

It's a happy job. For me, every day is a celebration and I get to spread happiness . . . literally.

What do you like least about the job?

Dog poop and rain. Yes, I do work in the rain.

What's your dream job?

Actually, I'd like to be a full-time newspaper journalist focusing on human interest stories.

What other jobs are available with the skills you have for this job?

Event and party planners. Event hosting.

How do you get started in this business?

A Global Positioning System is a must. There is also a worldwide trade association for lawn greeters. Their Web site is www.lawn-greetings.org.

Words of wisdom for future lawn greeters?

You can't be afraid of the dark in this business, and great customer service skills are a plus. It helps when you get pulled over by the police late at night with a load of pigs in the car.
