Florida's consumer confidence drops slightly

Florida's consumer confidence dipped slightly in April, remaining considerably lower than the national gauge, according to a University of Florida survey released Tuesday.

Survey director Chris McCarty said he was not surprised consumer sentiment here was "relatively flat" — with a one-point drop to 79 — given the lack of significant economic news. "Here in Florida, the economy remains on a steady path without any big changes, either negative or positive."

Florida's index remains below a level indicating economic optimism and is five points shy of the national level of 84. McCarty said an uptick in Florida unemployment last month may have dampened enthusiasm.

UF's index is benchmarked to 1966, which means a value of 100 signifies the same level of confidence as in that year.
