Tampa Bay tied for the second-largest drop in unemployment over the past year among major metro areas, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report Wednesday.
The bay area unemployment rate in June was 9 percent, down from 11.2 percent a year earlier. Compared with the 48 other metros with a population over 1 million, that decline of 2.2 percentage points tied Detroit and trailed only Las Vegas, where the jobless rate was down 2.3 percentage points from June 2011 levels.
Tampa Bay — and Florida overall — still lag the national unemployment rate of 8.2 percent and remain far above what's considered a more economically palatable level closer to 6 percent.
