TAMPA — Situated between the University of Tampa and downtown areas comes a new family-owned, Caribbean-style restaurant, Yah Mon.
"I grew up watching my grandmother, who had her own restaurant in the Virgin Islands, cook," said owner Janise Thompson. "We are a family full of chefs really."
The intimate restaurant, lined with white booths and black chairs, will embody a modern feel and serve signature Caribbean dishes such as mango infused guacamole, oxtail and curry goat, while also offering American classics including lasagna and steak.
Seafood will be a staple item with tilapia, red snapper and salmon choices, accompanied by plantains, mac 'n' cheese or rice and peas.
Beer and wine will constitute the alcoholic beverages.
Though this is her first full-serve restaurant, Thompson previously ran a catering company out of Orlando and Miami.
"The timing was right," Thompson said of her new venture. "Two other amazing women will take this walk with me, my amazing mother and wonderful mother-in-law."
Island music will fill the new dining room during their grand opening at 11 a.m. Oct. 1.
Yah Mon is located at 301 W Platt St. Visit their website, yahmontampa.com for the full menu.
