TAMPA — Attorneys presented two images of Joshua Rosa — one innocent, one sinister — in their last pitch Friday to the jury hearing his first-degree murder trial.

By night's end, jurors had given no indication which version they believed. After deliberating more than four hours, the panel requested a weekend recess, with instructions to return Monday morning to try again to reach a verdict.

Supporters of Rosa and 13-year-old Stephen Tomlinson, who died of strangulation on Dec. 8, 2005, in Carrollwood's Logan Gate Park, sat grimly when they learned that the wait for a verdict would drag on.

"This ain't good," whispered Stephen's father, Ron Tomlinson, as jurors left the courtroom at 7:45 p.m.

It had been a long week. Each day, family and friends of Rosa and Stephen packed the cavernous courtroom. They always sat on opposite sides, a delicate balance of emotion and decorum. Crew members for In Session, formerly known as Court TV News, captured every moment of the proceedings.

During his closing argument, defense attorney Brian Gonzalez said prosecutors put the wrong man on trial. Rosa was a full-time community college student, part-time employee at Sports Authority and youth ministry leader at Zion Pentecostal Church. He had been jogging that December evening, lost his keys and, as he searched for them, found the body of his young neighbor and acquaintance, Gonzalez said.

Rosa, then 19, tried to help Stephen, wiping his blood with a pair of white cotton gloves that he used for church activities, Gonzalez said.

A defense expert suggested that two people attacked Stephen, one strangling the teen from behind and another injuring his hip. The strangulation caused Stephen to bleed from the mouth and nose only after he died, said Dr. Ronald Wright, a private practitioner in Missouri.

That theory, Assistant State Attorney Jay Pruner said, made no sense.

Why? Because the defense had also argued that Rosa wiped blood from Stephen's face after finding him alive. The victim also had blood on one of his hands, indicating that he was already bleeding as he struggled with his assailant.

"It was not, unfortunately for Stephen Tomlinson, a quick death," Pruner said.

No one witnessed the killing or confessed to it, making the case against Rosa one of mostly circumstantial evidence.

But the prosecutor said Rosa did not find Stephen by coincidence. Only one person, Pruner said, had been seen looking for Stephen in the hours before his death. Only one person had carried a flashlight and walked toward the park five to 10 minutes behind Stephen. Only one person brought with him gloves and fingernail clippers, both of which tested positive for Stephen's DNA. Only one person's keys were found under the victim's body.

And only one person ran out of the woods saying that he did not know Stephen's identity — even though Rosa's mother testified that she had seen her son and Stephen hanging out on her porch just hours before.

"That one person," said Pruner, "is Joshua Rosa."

how many other kids may have been molested by this Rosa kid? These whacky churches produce a lot of evil people. i know several of them. did Rosa pull the wool over the eyes of church members? probably!

I believe the nail clippers have DNA evidence because Joshua was probably trying to clip his nails to get rid of any of the boy's DNA that would have gotten trapped under his fingernails with the struggle. It backfired on him.

who joggs in the woods? especailly with white gloves, and nail clippers in there pocket, and then come back to find his keys and finds them in between the kids legs. resonable doubt! have a nice day!

Definitely not guilty. Though there is "evidence" - it's extremely weak. Joshua Rosa is defintely innocent and you can even see it in the prosecution's witnesses' testimonies. It's crazy how the story is finally coming together.

I have known Joshua for over 12 yrs. He is innocent. The mere fact that he chose not to testify shows his integrity and faith in God. I pray the person who comitted this horible crime be found and brought to justice. God be with both families.

It's probably the "moose on the table" that no one really wants to mention and wasn't necessary for the prosecution of this case, but how could this not have been a matter of sexual assault which simply turned deadly before the assault.

I definitely believe Rosa is guilty. But i dont think someone who is doing positive things for his community should be put away for life. ( HARSH.!!! )

I have been watching the trial but its very complicated. i say he is not guilty i hope he can get out of this and move on with his life, my daughter thinks he is cute. Found guilty or not with God no one escapes!

After watching the entire court proceedings this week on tv., I have only one opinion. The prosecution has an extremely weak case. If I were on the jury I would have more than reasonable doubt. What if this were you or your son on trial?

My God, how does someone do such an awful act. Are children are not safe any more. Between the sex offender's and murder's. God be with the Steven's family. I am so sorry for your loss.

What's the big deal about nail clippers in pocket? - I know a lot of people who carry them. Lots of circumstantial evidence. Lots of doubt. I don't believe he's guilty.

How can this defendant possibly explain away all the myriad coincidences that put him with this poor victim BEFORE, DURING and AFTER this horrible death. We are looking into the face of EVIL. GUILTY!!!!!!
by Diane Jul 19, 2008 12:48 PM
As the mother of the person who found Steven after Rosa ran into him and his friends in the car, you have to think, Who runs with a flash light, fingernail clipers and supposedly looses keys only to be found near the child. GUILTY!
by Rob Jul 19, 2008 12:48 PM
Joshua is not guilty he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time the cops should try lookin at the people smoking weed and drinking beer in the park
by Tony Jul 19, 2008 12:48 PM
Why nail clippers? I don't understand.
by Dawn Jul 19, 2008 10:01 AM
We are suppose to believe this young man loss his keys and was looking for them and they magically show up between this poor kids legs. Not to mention I guess all 19 year olds carry nail clippers in their pockets while jogging.I say he is guilty!
by Mary Jul 19, 2008 10:01 AM
Have been watching trial, but grew tired of commercial interruptions and talking heads, so I decided to watch a live stream. Now I am sick with worry over the fate of this kid. How in the world did were charges ever brought against him? I understand
by Kayla Jul 19, 2008 10:01 AM
Ok so i have been watching this case on television and I'm going to tell you it is not as cut and dry as the media would have you believe so I wouldn't be suprised to see a not guilty verdict based on reasonable doubt.
