Brooksville man gets 13 years in sex case

Hernando County Sheriff's Office

BROOKSVILLE — A 35-year-old Brooksville man was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to lewd and lascivious battery and failure to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutors say William Eugene Sheller, formerly of Ohio, moved to Hernando County, did not register as a sex offender, and fondled a young girl. Sheller knew the girl, authorities say. He was arrested in December and originally charged with sexual battery as a family custodian.

Circuit Judge Daniel B. Merritt Jr. levied the punishment, which also requires Sheller to serve two years of house arrest and five years of sex offender probation after his release, said Assistant State Attorney Erin Daly. He must also register as a sexual predator.
