Grand jury indicts Tampa couple in $300K tax fraud

TAMPA — A Tampa couple has been indicted on federal charges that they bilked the government out of nearly $300,000 in fraudulent tax refunds, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.

Jermell C. Hickman and Ebonie Hampton, both of Tampa, are charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, filing false claims, theft of government property and aggravated identity theft.

According to the indictment, Hickman and Hampton engaged in a conspiracy from at least January 2012 through October 2012 to file fraudulent tax returns with stolen identities.

Besides prison time, the couple face a judgment of $288,607, which a grand jury found was the proceeds from the fraud.
