BROOKSVILLE — The mother of a young Spring Hill boy found wandering naked and drunk in February will avoid jail time.
Nedra Byrd, 32, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of child abuse and was sentenced to three years of probation. The court withheld adjudication for Byrd, who did not have any prior convictions.
Investigators say Byrd laughed when a deputy came to her house late on the night of Feb. 14 and asked if she knew why her 10-year-old son was walking naked in the neighborhood. Byrd said the boy was in his room and told the deputy she was "drunk as hell," a report shows. Investigators learned that the boy was also under the influence of alcohol after he told them that Byrd had given him four shots of brandy.
As part of her probation, Byrd must complete a parenting course, undergo a substance abuse evaluation and have no unsupervised contact with the boy. She told Circuit Judge Anthony Tatti that she has nearly completed a case plan with the Florida Department of Children and Families.
