Judge denies motion to freeze Julie Schenecker's assets

TAMPA — A judge denied a defense motion Thursday to freeze Julie Schenecker's assets so they could be used to repay public defenders representing her against first-degree murder charges in the deaths of her two teenagers.

The decision by Circuit Judge Ashley Moody came one day after an attorney for her soon-to-be ex-husband, Army Col. Parker Schenecker, filed opposition to the motion, arguing it threatened to delay divorce proceedings and appeared to be an attempt to compel him to finance the defense.

"After his children's tragic death," his attorney wrote, "Col. Schenecker could not imagine that there was anything else defendant could take from him."

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for April 5.
