NEW PORT RICHEY — A jury deliberated just 20 minutes before finding Brian Perry, 48, guilty of animal cruelty for beating his rescue dog to death with his fists.
Perry, who lives on Grand Boulevard, rescued a 4-year-old Rottweiler named Gipper in May of 2013. He'd only had Gipper about 15 days, according to testimony in court, before the 70-plus-pound dog ran away from him and into a nearby river. He got the dog, but then Gipper ran toward a neighbor's house.
The neighbor testified Perry hit the dog 10 times on his head and side. Other witnesses corroborated that; Perry said he hit the dog just twice.
Perry will be sentenced on May 2. He was taken into custody in the meantime, and could face up to five years in prison.
