TAMPA — A Tampa man who tried to mislead police by reporting as stolen the gun he used in a fatal robbery has been convicted of murder after a jury trial.
David Rodriguez, 42, was charged in the January 2012 murder of Colen Thomas, 49, at 702 E Broad St. Prosecutors said he attracted the attention of investigators when he "freaked out" and said the murder weapon had been stolen.
The gun was later found buried in his back yard.
A jury last week found Rodriguez guilty of first-degree murder, robbery and making a false report to an officer.
Sentencing in the case is scheduled for July.
