Land O'Lakes couple plead no contest in tax-withholding case

A Land O'Lakes couple accused last year of withholding more than $1 million in payroll taxes — but never turning that money over to the Internal Revenue Service — pleaded no contest Thursday in court. Ronald D. Mascitti, 43, and his wife, Elizabeth, 53, who also have an address in Spring Hill, ran Professional Payroll Plus, which provided payroll services for numerous companies. Originally facing up to 30 years for grand theft, fraud and conspiracy charges, the couple negotiated a plea involving no jail time and three years' probation. But they agreed to repay the money they still owe, and in court on Thursday handed over the first installment: a check for $175,000.
