NEW PORT RICHEY — A former caregiver was convicted in federal court this week of swindling funds from an 80-year-old woman.
Authorities say Rebecca Moody, 61, falsely obtained power of attorney over the woman, and used that to take out a fraudulent loan on the victim's home, which the woman owned outright. Moody also stole other money from the victim, who is deaf and legally blind.
After a 12-day trial at the federal courthouse in Tampa, a jury convicted Moody on Thursday of wire fraud and transportation of stolen property, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. She faces up to 30 years in federal prison when she is sentenced Dec. 2.
