Officer's killer now charged with murder

Marco Antonio Parilla Jr. was indicted by a grand jury on Friday in the killing of Tarpon Springs police Officer Charles Kondek last month.

The indictment means Parilla is formally charged with first-degree murder. Pinellas-Pasco Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett said it was an important step forward in prosecuting a crime that never should have happened.

Also Friday, prosecutors filed the formal paperwork indicating they will seek the death penalty against Parilla. No trial date has been set. Parilla, 23, is accused of shooting Kondek early on the morning of Dec. 21, when the officer arrived at a Tarpon Springs apartment to investigate a noise complaint. Kondek, 45, was married with six children.
