TAMPA — A prominent Tampa lawyer's son who was involved in a 2003 fatal car wreck has been charged with aggravated stalking based on his former girlfriend's complaint that he has terrified her, her father and her friends.
Gable Yerrid, 24, the son of lawyer Steve Yerrid, appeared Thursday at a domestic violence injunction hearing.
A defense attorney told Hillsborough Family Court Judge Lawrence Lefler that Gable Yerrid felt "humiliated" by his actions, realized he was wrong and would not harm his former girlfriend or anyone else. But in an arrest report, a Tampa police officer wrote that Yerrid told him, "Mr. Piggy, you're just a civil servant."
His ex-girlfriend, Lindsay Anne Hance, was injured in a 2010 shooting involving Yerrid. At the time, the couple told police they had checked out noise from the second story of their South Tampa home when Yerrid shot her in the right foot. Hance said it was an accident and she didn't want Yerrid prosecuted.
On Thursday, Hance said she and Yerrid were no longer together. She said he has harassed her since she moved out two months ago by calling, texting and coming by her apartment. She told police he once tore off her necklace. On Saturday, according to police, he texted her at least 10 times while an officer was present.
Hance told the judge that Yerrid has substance abuse problems and needs professional help.
In 2003, Yerrid, then 16, was speeding down Bayshore Boulevard near Magnolia Avenue when his Cadillac Escalade struck a Nissan Altima driven by Nancy Christine White Bradley. Bradley was killed and Yerrid suffered a broken leg.
Prosecutors declined to criminally charge Yerrid in Bradley's death, saying speed alone was not enough to do so under the law. He received a civil citation for unlawful speed involving death.
Afterward, he wrote a children's book, Marley's Treasure. His father found the publisher. Gable Yerrid pledged part of the proceeds to the Marley Fund, a division of the family's Yerrid Foundation that was developed to promote public charities.
On Thursday, Gable Yerrid's attorney said Steve Yerrid wants his son to stand on his own as an adult, but has offered to help him get counseling and any medication he needs.
Hance said the father had made those promises before. She said she didn't believe Yerrid should be in jail, but she feared his anger over being locked up and wanted some assurance from the court that she and her family would be safe.
Lefler set bond at $2,500 and ordered Yerrid to have no contact with the woman or her father and friends. He still faces charges of aggravated stalking, a felony, and making harassing phone calls, a misdemeanor.
Lefler said any violation of the no-contact order would lead to Yerrid's arrest.
