TAMPA — A Pinellas Park man accused of plotting terror attacks in Tampa was indicted Thursday on two federal charges.
A grand jury indicted Sami Osmakac, 25, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Kosovo, on charges of attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and possession of an unregistered machine gun.
Osmakac, who has been in custody since his Jan. 7 arrest, faces life in prison if convicted. His trial date in U.S. District Court has not yet been scheduled.
Osmakac is accused of trying to buy guns and explosives, including a car bomb, to destroy targets in Tampa, including a Hillsborough Sheriff's operations center. But his plans were thwarted when an acquittance reported him to the FBI.
He said he wanted to instill terror in his victims' hearts, calling it "payback" for wrongs done to Muslims, an arrest affidavit said.
