Tampa bank robber sentenced to federal prison

TAMPA — A 33-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in federal prison for six bank robberies, including three where he threatened to kill bank tellers.

Kevin James Algood robbed about one bank a day during a week starting Aug. 23 in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. He took a total of about $13,663, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

After his last robbery in Largo, police caught Algood running out of a BB&T Bank with money stuffed in his shirt.

Algood pleaded guilty on Nov. 23.

Along with U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara's sentence, Algood must forfeit $8,155 traced back to the robberies.

  1. FBI: Florida man sympathized with IS, wanted to bomb mall

    Courts

MIAMI (AP) — A Florida man who described himself as a sympathizer of the Islamic State extremist group faces terrorism-related charges stemming from a purported plot to bomb a Miami-area shopping mall, according to court documents filed Monday.

An undated file image posted on an extremist website on Jan. 14, 2014, shows fighters from the Islamic State group marching in Raqqa, Syria. The group champions a hyper-religious lifestyle grounded in a self-proclaimed caliphate, but most recruits have a superficial understanding of religion and are largely ignorant in the laws of Islam.
