Crash kills bicyclist on Howard Frankland Bridge

A crash Wednesday night killed a man on a bicycle and blocked all four southbound lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge.

Police identified the cyclist as John M. Brennan, 44, of Sayreville, N.J. He died at the scene.

William B. Matthews, 67, was driving south in the outside lane on the Tampa side of the bridge's hump when he drove into the shoulder and struck Brennan around 7:15 p.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Matthews fled the scene but was later stopped by troopers on Ulmerton Road in Pinellas County, according to the Highway Patrol. Troopers suspect he was driving drunk.

Two lanes have been reopened.
