TAMPA — Hillsborough School Board members approved a moratorium on their own travel Tuesday, until they come up with guidelines and a budget.
School Board Chairwoman Jennifer Faliero asked for the measure, saying they needed to demonstrate they felt the pain of a tight budget year. She pointed to disparities in their travel as a reason for action.
Board member Susan Valdes has spent more than $9,000 traveling out of the county since last July, of which the district was reimbursed for just over $1,000. On the opposite end, Carol Kurdell expensed just $300 for such travels.
The moratorium excludes imminent trips already planned by board members Candy Olson and Jack Lamb. In an election year, it passed unanimously, although it took two tries to get everyone's approval on the wording. Board member April Griffin was absent. And a majority of the elected officials made it clear they still support traveling in certain circumstances, but agreed that general guidelines were needed.
In other business, board members agreed to oppose all constitutional amendments on the November ballot. Voters will have a say on several proposals that could have an impact on education, such as eliminating state-required property taxes for schools.
Principals on the move: Fredda Johnson was named principal of Randall Middle School. Dave Burgess was appointed to Roland Park K-8 School. James Rich was named principal at Erwin Technical Center.

Funny, the Legisalture will be spending money for their travel. I guess their meetings are important while everyone else needs to "live within their means."
