Caetano runs for Hillsborough school board

TAMPA — Joseph Caetano, a one-time Tampa City Council member from New Tampa, has filed to replace Carol Kurdell on the Hillsborough County School Board.

This isn't the first school board run for Caetano. In 1996 he ran unsuccessfully in a field that included Sharon Danaher and current School Board chairwoman Susan Valdes.

Caetano, who owns a hair salon, served on the city council between 2007 and 2011.

Four seats on the school board will be decided in 2016. So far two incumbents — Valdes and Cindy Stuart — have filed to run for re-election. Kurdell and Doretha Edgecomb have not yet filed.

Valdes is running against former teacher and running coach Lynn Gray. Stuart is challenged by Seffner homemaker Alicia Toler. Tarance Delento LeNoir is the only candidate in Edgecomb's central Tampa district.

Caetano is running for a countywide seat, along with Stanley Gray, Norene Miller, Mitchell Smithey and Randy Toler.

  5. Lightning's Steven Stamkos looks close to top form in first game since November

    Lightning Strikes

TAMPA — The wait felt like forever for Lightning captain Steven Stamkos, having gone 10 months without playing in a game.

A scramble in front of the Lightning goal has Matthew Peca, far left, and Erik Cernak, middle, helping out goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy during the third period of a 3-1 win against the Predators. Vasilevskiy, who made 29 saves, was “exceptional,” coach Jon Cooper says.
