Clearwater mayor helps spread the joy of reading to kids

Jumpstart's Read for the Record day in Clearwater on Thursday kept Mayor George Cretekos busy with some Pinellas County kindergarteners. The Jumpstart program, in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, brings together children and adults to read the same book on the same day. Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad, this year's official book, is by David Soman and Jacky Davis. The Pearson Foundation is donating 640 copies of the book to Pinellas County Schools. But every family, library and classroom in the nation can also read Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad for free through, a digital reading initiative from Pearson and the Penguin Group, which offers a free library of digital children's books. For every digital book read, Pearson will donate a book to a child who needs it, helping to reach the campaign goal of giving a million books by the end of this school year.
