SPC Clearwater campus tailors degrees to weekend students

Beginning this fall, SPC Weekend College will offer students the chance to earn an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science in business administration by taking classes entirely on the weekends. The program is being offered only at the Clearwater campus and is aimed at those whose work or family responsibilities keep them too busy to attend classes during the week. Information sessions will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 30 and July 11, on the Clearwater Campus, ES 104, at 2465 Drew Street. For more information, visit spcollege.edu/weekendcollege.

It's a record: Eckerd students win Hollings scholarships — again

Seven Eckerd College students have won Hollings scholarships, named for former U.S. Sen. Ernest Hollings of South Carolina and designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science. The students will receive thousands of dollars in financial aid and a paid 10-week internship at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agency. Eckerd students have won 62 Hollings scholarships since the program began in 2005, more than any other college or university in the country. This year's scholars are Jason Baer of McLean, Va., majoring in marine science and Spanish studies; Daniel Chapman of Fort Collins, Colo., marine science and biochemistry; Brittany Evans of Hartwell, Ga., marine science; Carina Graham of Potomac, Md., biology; Austin Hunter of Jacksonville, Ill., marine science and biochemistry; Sarah Raney of Chesterfield, Mo., marine science and environmental studies; and Jessica Richter of St. Charles, Ill., marine science. "Winning a Hollings scholarship takes hard work and dedication by both our students and our outstanding faculty," Eckerd dean of faculty Suzan Harrison said. In addition to the NOAA internship, each winner will receive a total of $16,000 in scholarships for their junior and senior years.

USFSP to renovate student center

The Student Life Center at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg is scheduled to undergo renovations this month. The school said the changes aim to increase students' awareness of opportunities to get involved on campus. "There are many ways for students to become involved, by serving on the Harborside Activities Board, in Student Government, and through the Multicultural Center," said Matt Morrin, director of Student Life and Engagement. "We hope this new building design will spark the interest of students who are walking by." The project will enclose the front patio; relocate the fitness center entrance to the main entrance; create more lounge space and expand the Multicultural Center. Fitness Center hours will be affected this summer. For more information, visit usfsp/campusrec.
