DADE CITY — Time is running out to apply for this year's scholarship program offered by the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative.
This year, the company will offer $720,000 in scholarships, funded with unclaimed capital credits. That works out to 90 awards of $8,000, or $1,000 per semester over four years. Since the program began in 1997, the company has given out nearly 1,200 scholarships totaling $5.2 million.
"There is no other entity or organization that I know of that does what we do," said company spokesman David Lambert. Other electric co-ops have scholarship programs, he said, but not on the same scale.
To be eligible, a student must be a high school senior whose family has been a member of the cooperative for at least a year.
Students must have at least a 2.0 grade-point average and must plan to attend an in-state college or technical school.
The application deadline is March 7.
Students should contact their guidance counselor or visit wrec.net/educational_foundation.php to apply or get information.
