ST. PETERSBURG — A 7.4 square-mile event zone that will be set up in preparation for the Republican National Convention has prompted officials to alter the move-in schedule for students at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg.
The changes to the schedule were made to avoid potential conflicts resulting from students moving onto campus at the same time as the convention's kickoff event Aug. 26 at Tropicana Field.
Among the alterations:
• Freshman convocation is canceled.
• Move-in times for residential students will be on a single day, Saturday, Aug. 25.
• Watercraft at the USF-St. Petersburg waterfront will be unavailable on Sunday, Aug. 26.
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the RNC kickoff event. The entire USF-St. Petersburg campus falls within the event zone, which extends from Fifth Avenue N to Seventh Avenue S and from 22nd Street to Tampa Bay. The zone will include enhanced security, including the closure of some downtown streets.
The USF-St. Petersburg campus will remain open the week of the RNC with classes beginning as scheduled.
