SPC pumps millions into Pinellas, study finds

Annie Meier, 20, of Gulfport studies for a Spanish test at the St. Petersburg College campus at 6605 Fifth Ave. N. The school was part of an economic impact study released last week by the Florida College System. Florida's 28 state and community colleges add $27 billion to the state economy every year — including $856 million in Pinellas from SPC, the study concluded. It found that SPC spends $124 million a year on payroll and other expenses, that its students create $711 million in annual added income due to increased productivity, and that its out-of-county students spend $20.5 million a year in Pinellas. The study was performed by Economic Modeling Specialists International. Meier is a sophomore at SPC pursuing a degree in biology.
