Head of Academy Prep on leave of absence

ST. PETERSBURG — The "head of school'' for St. Petersburg's Academy Prep, on the job just six months, has been "granted a leave of absence,'' school officials announced Friday.

DeVere Beard, 40, was hired last September to run the private academy, which has gained widespread renown for educating low-income African-American students in grades five through eight with rigorous academics and long hours.

Beard could not be reached for comment or more detail. Neither board chair Linda Marcelli nor Gianna Russo, the school's communications coordinator, returned phone calls.

Leane Bayne, an 11-year veteran teacher, has been named acting head of school, the release said, "to insure an orderly and seamless transition.''
