12-year-old's Eagle Scout project benefits other Clearwater students

Early in May, 12-year-old Nick Fatolitis, a seventh-grader at Clearwater Fundamental School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, making him one of the youngest in Florida to be presented with the badge.

For his Eagle Scout project, Nick created an outdoor classroom at his school. He worked more than 600 hours turning an 1,800-square-foot area overgrown with weeds and non-native plants into an environment where students can read in a quiet setting, perform environmental science experiments, study geology, perform plays and enjoy other activities. Teachers are using it to enhance their lessons.

Nick is the son of George and Linda Fatolitis of Palm Harbor.
