The public often hears about school bus drivers when there's trouble — accidents, viral videos of students being bullied, driver shortages. But on the vast majority of days, drivers manage to get tens of thousands of students to and from school without incident. And that was the point of last week's vote by the Pinellas County School Board recognizing 30 drivers who have had 10 or more years with perfect records.
At the top of the list is Wanda Prosser, who has driven Pinellas school buses for 20 years straight with no accidents or tickets. Her secret: "A lot of patience and not stressing."
School officials say it's relatively easy to teach a new driver the mechanics of driving a big yellow school bus; the hard part is dealing with young passengers.
"You just have to really enjoy them, see them for who they are and what they can be," says Prosser, 55, of Dunedin. "If you respect them, they respect you, too."
