Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg is looking for a new leader after an announcement that head of school Leanne Howard is stepping down.
Howard will remain in her post through the end of the school year and will participate in the search for a successor, the school said in a statement.
Howard said the rigors of being a first-time parent prompted her decision to leave the position.
"Working at Academy Prep is a calling that takes unique, mission-driven individuals who are ready and able to dedicate the time and energy required to successfully guide our students and graduates," she said.
Academy Prep is a rigorous private middle school for low-income children in St. Petersburg. Its students attend school 11 hours a day, six days a week for 11 months of the year.
The school is at 2301 22nd Ave. S in St. Petersburg.
Howard joined the staff as a teacher in 2000 and became head of school three years ago.
Joe Bourdow, chairman of the school's board, said the board is sad to see her go, but praised her work.
"Because of Ms. Howard's leadership, Academy Prep is fully enrolled and continues to uphold its remarkable record of placing graduates into high quality private, boarding and magnet high schools and supporting them through college," Bourdow said. "We look forward to Ms. Howard's counsel and continued involvement in the future."
