Pinellas school officials on Friday released a map showing the "close-to-home" zones for elementary schools throughout the county.

The map is a primary feature of the new student assignment system, which replaces the choice plan.

The new zones will go into effect immediately as the district continues to place students for the 2008-09 school year, which begins Aug. 19.

Zones for middle and high schools were also released last week.

Because the map lacks detail on streets and roads, many families will not be able to tell where their zone is.

Those families should call the district's student assignment office at (727) 588-6210 or the call center at (727) 587-2020.

Employees at both numbers will be able to provide the name of your new close-to-home school if you give them your address.

Students already in the system are automatically assigned to their current school. Students who do not like their current school can try to change it during a new open enrollment period currently scheduled for Aug. 4-15. However, the district is considering an earlier time, perhaps in June.

Students new to the district can get a 2008-09 school assignment starting April 21.

Parents can register at any Pinellas elementary school, where they will be given a user ID and password to access the student reservation system online. Computers are available on site if needed.

This map seems WORSE than the orginal draft. We are now at the 4th closest school to our home, instead of the one we can WALK to. Absolutely insane. We will have to be bussed to another city. Our school board is inept and this is embarrassing for all

The bizarrely gerrymandered assignment map is found here: http://www.pcsb.org/choice/files/08-9%20StuAsgntEL.pdf

Poor planning, no map on web site or PCSB web site. When you call the school board, they said the Area Map will NOT be released for elementary students (for kindergarten) until 4-21.

Poorly planned article which references you to elementary school maps but cannot be found anywhere on your website. Actual map is not on your website as implied in article.
