Gulf High principal's transfer remains a mystery
By
Jeffrey S. Solochek, Times Staff Writer
In print: Wednesday, May 7, 2008
LAND O'LAKES — The reasons behind veteran Gulf High principal Tom Imerson's transfer remained a mystery Tuesday, even as the School Board approved the move. Only superintendent Heather Fiorentino seemed to know exactly what she has in store for Imerson, who will become a "principal on assignment" — a position that she has yet to define even for Imerson himself. "The superintendent hasn't talked to me about the position" except in passing, said Imerson, 62, who has led Gulf High since 2002. Rumors have swirled for months that Fiorentino planned to oust Imerson over some type of mismanagement. Two teachers have filed grievances against him in recent months. "That was one of my concerns, that I was being moved because I had done something wrong," Imerson, a 22-year Pasco school administrator, acknowledged after the board vote. "That has not come up. … I did nothing wrong." Fiorentino supported that viewpoint, saying several principals have complaints filed against them, and she "can't stop rumors." She insisted that her primary goal is to "make sure I've got the right people in the right seats on the bus." Imerson did not apply for a new job. Fiorentino asked that he accept a move. At least three other moves are in the works, maybe more, she said, adding that she would not tell anyone — including Imerson — what his role will be until all the pieces are in place. School Board members, who also have received only limited information about Fiorentino's reorganization plans, raised a handful of questions about the changes during their meeting Tuesday. Board member Allen Altman said he wanted assurances that he wasn't voting to create new positions within the district administration by supporting Imerson's appointment to an ill-defined job. Fiorentino answered that the transfer would not affect the budget. Imerson will continue to earn his $96,206.60 annual salary, and he will replace someone who is leaving the district. "We are kind of shifting a few positions around in the district," she said, also noting that Pasco County's administrative expenses per student are among the lowest in the state. One of the leadership shifts puts assistant superintendent for elementary schools Ruth Reilly into the district's second-in-command position as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She replaces Sandy Ramos, who is retiring. Another places Bayonet Point Middle School principal Steve Knobl in the principal's office at Gulf High. The School Board approved both positions Tuesday. Knobl's transfer, which takes effect June 9, already has raised concerns at Bayonet Point Middle, board chairwoman Kathryn Starkey said. That school has had six principals in seven years, she noted, and teachers are "feeling low" about the lack of continuity. "We are aware of the issues at Bayonet Point, and we will be looking out for them," Starkey said. Jeffrey S. Solochek can be reached at solochek@sptimes.com or (813) 909-4614. >>Fast facts School Board action The Pasco School Board met Tuesday and took the following action: • Agreed to close district services on Fridays in July, with the exception of a handful of programs including pre-K, PLACE and human resources. The cost-cutting measure is expected to save about $90,000. • Learned that the district has received a state grant to build affordable housing for school employees. • Heard that all written arguments in the Deerwood Academy charter school lawsuit against the district have been submitted, and the case is now with the judge for a decision.

Imerson is a good man. Donaldson does not have what it takes to be a Superintendent.

96k/annual? That's outrageous... What does he even do? Sit in his chair, making gay popping noises over the morning announcements? This is honestly the worst thing I have ever heard of, I'm pissed I'm going to have to get my picture with him at grad.

Politics in Pasco? All the more reason we should have an appointed superintendent so the School Board can choose from a wide variety of qualified candidates, ones with experience beyond an elementary school classroom & Tallahassee.

Slimy says he did nothing wrong? Why would Imerson not be present during FCAT testing week to support the lower 25% student population, especially when GHS is a "D" school? Oh what a wicked web of deceit he's weaved?

As a formor student I felt very unsafe at gulf when i went to Imerson about my concerns he blew me off like it was not his problem. He only cared for the IB students. My oponion is that Imerson was mot capable of running the school then and is not now.

Imerson has earned the nickname Slimy Immy. He is a disgrace to the District. The District Office was notified about his strange behavior at GHS over three years ago. My question is "Why did it take so long to remove him ?"

Mystery? Verbal abuse of a female teacher and paying a coach who didn't coach for starters. Imerson should be fired...period.

Natalie is incorrect. The Board does not decide where administrators go. According to the Board, they were unaware of the change until it was submitted to them. School Board members have stated that the have no say under the law. Heather must GO!

Imerson's removal IS NOT a mystery . . . everyone who works for him knows why . . . why not ask some of his teachers. Fiorentino knows why too!

People need to cut Heather son slack. She is not the only superintendent who has moved administrators to district office, John Long was good at it, too. There maybe legal reasons Heather is not telling all. The board decides, she recommends.

Imerson may not know why but the staff of GHS surely does. Forget his rages at staff, his temper tantrums, his childish antics and treatment of students and just go with a D rating for a school with an IB program.

What's the mystery? Pasco has a history of rewarding inept principals with a record of parent complaints and teacher grievances with jobs at district or new schools to open. Imerson to district, Stone to Sun Lake - the list goes on and on.

How can the Board approve a transfer to a position that has not been defined or explained? Is that what I read in the first paragraph? The actions of both the Superintendent and Board should be viewed as cause for concern.

While removing Imerson is a good move, placing Knobl at Gulf is a horrible one. Fiorentino again shows that the students of Pasco County are the least of her concerns as she takes from Bayonet Point the best thing going for them. Schrewed politics!

Tmerson must have changed. He was a great person when I worked for him, always kind and cared for the students.
Maybe the teachers were not doing their jobs. People that live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Imerson doesn't know why???? District doesn't make a move like that unless it's serious. He's a liability for the district and he's getting paid for it. Give me some of that!

Was Marge Whaley at this meeting? She is usually the voice of reason. How can this board approve jobs created at district for administrators with serious allegations against them? Does Heather think anyone but the board is buying this?

Teachers need to vote in huge huge numbers in November and find a superintendant that does not play these kind of games with the district's money.

Cut programs and save 90k or SPEND 96k to save a principal who should be terminated. People need to remember the superintendant's handling of this come election time.

Maybe this reporter should attend the school board meeting at which the Level 4 grievances filed against this principal will be heard. It is unbelievable that Heather and Jim Davis are sweeping this all under the rug, then again, not so hard.

The fact he announced his decision prematurely shows his lack of professional skill. If he is to be at the district, he will have to keep his mouth shut. This shows his lack of ability to be an effective administrator.

A third mention of this in the Times, and a third whitewashing of the issue. Fiorentino needs to come clean about the issues with Imerson. This is wrong.
