BROOKSVILLE — Rick Stone made sure he arrived early at the Hernando High School gym Tuesday night so that he would not miss a moment of his youngest son's graduation.

He never got a chance to see Josh walk across the platform to accept his diploma. In fact, a lot of angry people missed the ceremony because they were told there was no room at the gym.

According to Stone and others, school officials closed the doors to the gym more than 45 minutes before the scheduled start time of 7:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to watch the ceremony was directed to the auditorium where it was being shown on closed circuit TV.

Stone said he was hugely disappointed.

"You put your kid through school for 13 years looking forward to the day when they graduate and then you're told you have to watch it on television?" Stone asked. "That's just not right."

Hernando High assistant principal Dianne Saltsman told BayNews 9 reporter Ferdinand Zogbaum she was unaware that people had been barred from the gym.

"At five until 7 Mr. (Mark) Griffith, one of our other assistant principals, was over in the area and parents were still going in and out," Saltsman said.

Stone, who brought along his video camera to capture the ceremony, said the footage he shot disputes that. He said that when he arrived about 6:40 p.m. he saw several officers from the Brooksville Police Department and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office blocking the doors.

No one, he said, was allowed in or out. Stone's video shows more than a dozen irate family members berating the deputies and pleading to be let into the gym. As more family members arrive, the growing crowd outside the gym can be heard chanting in protest of their treatment.

"It was just poor, poor planning," said parent Paul Nazar. He said his family arrived at roughly 6:40 for his son's graduation, only to be turned away. "My mother drove here from Key West and had to watch on a (expletive) TelePrompTer," Nazar added.

Principal Betty Harper said the school gives each senior six or seven tickets and people are allowed into the gymnasium on a first-come, first-served basis. When the gym is at capacity, others are directed to overflow seating in the arts center where they can watch the ceremony on a large-screen television, she said.

"We can't determine who the parents are, but everyone who comes in has to have a ticket," she said. "At a certain time, we do close the doors as the procession has to come in. That's how it's been for the five years I've been here and probably the five years before that."

Nevertheless, Harper said incoming principal Ken Pritz has approved a plan to hold future graduations outdoors in the football stadium, at the suggestion of the School Advisory Committee.

Harper said only a small number of families were excluded from the gym Tuesday, and some were eventually let in when open seats were found.

For Rick Stone, that was hardly a consolation.

"It seems nobody was thinking of the graduates or the families," Stone said. "And I missed seeing my son graduate because of it."

Tom, you are an idiot. Do you have a child in school? Have you ever attended your child's graduation? I'm looking forward to your reply.

TOM YOUR A HEARTLESS --------
by Dee Jun 12, 2008 6:24 PM
The entire situation was not handled appropriately. Why didn't they do what they did last yr? No probs last yr.I graduated in Palm Spring CA....June 7 1980something...hot as heck, we survived in dress clothes & a robe.
by wendy Jun 12, 2008 6:23 PM
After teaching at HHS and seeing how bad administration is, I am not surprised. They have managed to screw up everything else, why not graduation, too? Pray for Moton, West Hernando and Deltona!
by jason Jun 12, 2008 5:45 PM
As a mid-1980s alum of St.Petersburg High School, grad ceremonies were traditionally held on the football field. Early evening, not too hot and plenty of seating. We had great leadership from principal Vyrle Davis. Ughh, I feel old now.
by Stan Jun 12, 2008 5:07 PM
Taxpayer. You are the idiot. Ms. Saltsman was doing her job, why attack her personally. Having graduated with her from HHS, I remember her being in the top 3 of our class. I also worked with her at another school and found her to be a great teacher

I got tears in my eyes and fely rage when I read this article. I was able to see our son graduate as did my parents did when I graduated. Just seems like under effort of our county to show there inability to think forward with common sense.
by LDH Jun 12, 2008 3:44 PM
'Tom', you obviously are not a caring parent nor had a parent that supported your accomplishments. How dare you judge a Mom's disappointment in not seeing her child master their first real accomplishment!
by stacey Jun 12, 2008 3:14 PM
unfortunatly, laws are laws and capacity seating is a law thats must be obeyed, the poilce did their job, it was poor planning though, they should of held grad w/ more seating capacity
by kelly Jun 12, 2008 3:06 PM
Tom you call missing your childs graduation a mishap. It only happens once. It is the last big event of their childhood. She was probably also crying for her son who would have to graduate without any family. You must not have kids.
by R Jun 12, 2008 2:41 PM
Limit the ceremony to 1 or 1 1/2 hours. Rotate several schools a day. Use the Dome, Sun Dome, Ice Palace etc. Outside in FL is too hot in June. Taxpayers helped pay for these facilities, Use them! An DO NOT charge for parking - the ultimate insult!
by Richard D Jun 12, 2008 2:40 PM
Tacky. School staff should be able to count. Six tickets times the number of students. This isn't poor planning, this is no planning. It appears that to the staff this was just another school activity, not the important day it should be.
by PC Jun 12, 2008 2:37 PM
"Hey kids, now that we taught you to read + write the word incompetence, let us give you a lesson in how it is applied." The planners should be required to take remedial math, you know, if X number of people are coming, but the gym only holds Y ...

This is horrific! Each parent who did not grt in should be given a copy of the ceromony on a DVD. My daughters school was selling them so I know they are available. The administrators should do whatever it takes to make this up to the parents.
by Karlie Jun 12, 2008 1:51 PM
A child's first major accomplishment and one of the proudest moments in life for both child and parent denied due to complete incompetency and ignorance. You can never replace or repair such a golden moment. New administration and leadership NOW!
by Desmo Jun 12, 2008 1:51 PM
What part of "first come, first served" didn't these idiots understand? Go watch your kid shuffle across the stage on tv and if your kid does somehow make it to graduation of college get there earlier.
by Lea Jun 12, 2008 1:50 PM
I'd like to see them try to stop me from seeing my oldest child graduate!!! When I graduated we were more than happy to have our commencement ceremony somewhere else so our families could attend. Outdoors= too hot, possible rain. Give each 4 tickets!
by Jim Jun 12, 2008 1:49 PM
The lady in the pink needs to grow up. I'm sure it was upsetting not to get in but yelling and screaming at the Police! Give me a break. I would have let everyone in then had the Fire Marshall come in a tell everyone it was over the capacity.
by Tina Jun 12, 2008 1:47 PM
I am SICK for these parents! This brought tears. These folks can NEVER get that moment back. How DARE these people try to justify their total lack of planning and consideration. One for the MORONS at HHS. I wouldn't want them teaching my kid ANYTHING
by Steve Jun 12, 2008 1:47 PM
Oh stop the whining. Just because the fire code keeps you from watching takes nothing away from the event or the accomplishment. Jeesh, it's only a high school graduation with a poor Florida education. It's about the parents self-importance.
by DAV Jun 12, 2008 1:47 PM
I agree with the comment that the school administration is guilty of poor planning. The school administrator along with the planner of the graduation should be held accountable. There is absolutely no excuse for their arrogance! Try another venue!
by Ferlin Jun 12, 2008 1:36 PM
Heck folks, what they shoulda did was hold the gradiation outside, say at the fargrounds and had a monster truck rally right afterwards. Git-r-done!
by Lucy Jun 12, 2008 1:35 PM
the problem is that too many people feel they need to attend a graduation. it should be immediate family only. others can share in the celebration at a graduation party.
by Tc Jun 12, 2008 1:34 PM
I agree Tom, really "mom" get a grip! She's hysterical, And Robert.. I am sure it wasn't only the "rich and Powerful" that got in... your ridiculous.
by carolyn Jun 12, 2008 1:34 PM
this is bs - i would be so upset.
by Ashley Jun 12, 2008 1:16 PM
They had to watch on a tv boohoo! Get over it! People need to let the small stuff go and get over it!
by Ferlin Jun 12, 2008 1:16 PM
Necks time I have a kinfolk gradiate, we kin have the seramoney at the trailer park. They's lots o' room there since the naybors moved out. Reckon why they did that?
by Mary Jun 12, 2008 1:15 PM
Wow! The administrators obviously can't do simple math. x seats - y staffers divided by z students = # of tickets per student. And that's only middle school level math!
by Junio Jun 12, 2008 1:15 PM
As an HHS graduate years ago, we had ours at the stadium next door. Hellloooo!
by tim Jun 12, 2008 1:15 PM
Is this the USA???
by frankie Jun 12, 2008 1:15 PM
Florida needs to lighten up. 45 mins before ceremony closing gate. This Principle is too rigid and over zealous.. It is ashame a once in a life time event was ruined for some parents and students by a Power Driven Egomaniac.
by Sharon Jun 12, 2008 1:14 PM
Lakewood High in St. Pete held their graduations outside in the 90s when my sons were there, and who cared about the sun and heat? We all got to be there1 Hernando High planned poorly.
by Tom Jun 12, 2008 1:14 PM
The photo of the mom crying like a baby was a little over the top. Aside from having a kid that is going to be mortified, this woman needs serious help if this little mishap throws her into a crying fit.
by carol Jun 12, 2008 1:13 PM
i am not shocked nothing this county does is shocking anymore its a poorly run machine
by Bill Jun 12, 2008 12:57 PM
Good thing this event was only a graduation ceremony and not a shotgun wedding where things could have really gotten out of control.
